After taking LLB and MA qualifications in Law at Oxford University and qualifying as a Solicitor Stephen trained at Stephenson Harwood in the city of London and spent 12 years with Rayfield Mills in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, dealing with both contentious matters (particularly litigation in relation to insurance, marine, transport and commodity trading disputes) and non-contentious matters relating to secured lending for real property, shares, yachts, commercial vessels and other property). Stephen represented Total Transport Corporation in "The Protank Orinoco", reported in the Lloyds List in 1997, being a seminal English Commercial Court case on deductions from carriage freight in the oil industry.
While in Newcastle, Stephen also acted as the author of educational materials in insurance law for Northumbria University and lectured regularly on developments in commercial insurance and marine law as well as writing for industry publications.

Stephen advises on corporate, insurance, shipping and aviation and on transactional commercial matters - including trusts, gaming and property law.  Stephen speaks fluent Spanish (holding the diploma of the Institute of Linguists) and also speaks conversational French and Italian.
